HIGH COURT QUASHES GOV’T PLAN TO IMPORT GMO FOOD PRODUCTS “TEMPORARILY”

The High Court has today quashed the Government’s plan to gazette and import Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) foods.

In a ruling made by High Court Judge Mugure Thande she also prohibited the distribution of GMO foods to the public pending hearing and determination of a case filed in Court by the Kenya peasants League

“This Honourable Court be pleased to issue an injunctive and/or conservatory Order prohibiting the Respondents herein either by themselves, their agents or through such other personating under their instructions from gazetting or acting upon the contents of dispatch from the Cabinet authored by the Executive Office of the President of Kenya,” she stated.

The government had earlier brought in maize which was thought to be of GMO product, this was in order to curb the rising hunger in the currently.

President Ruto had lifted the ban that was imposed on the products which was effective for ten years.
