REAL SOCIEDAD 0-1 MAN UNITED
Alejandro Garnacho gets his first senior goal for Manchester United as they defeat Real Sociedad 1-0 in
Spain to finish second in their Europa League group. Erik ten Hag’s club will now face a third-place
Champions League team in a two-legged play-off round in February.
Alejandro Garnacho’s first senior goal gave Manchester United a 1-0 victory over Real Sociedad in
Spain, but it was insufficient for Erik ten Hag’s team to top their Europa League group. As a result, United
finished second in Group E, behind Sociedad on goal differential, and they must now compete in a two-
legged play-off round against a third-placed Champ.
Ten minutes after the Argentine’s miss, Ronaldo almost missed a wonderful opportunity to increase
United’s lead just before halftime when he hoisted his shot over the crossbar. David de Gea’s superb
double saves guaranteed that United had the necessary lead at halftime, but despite the arrivals of
Marcus Rashford and substitute striker Harry Maguire, they were unable to score the crucial second goal
after the break. Sociedad, who won Group E, will learn their opponents in the round of 16 on February
24, following the conclusion of the play-off round.
In order to pass Sociedad, United needed to win by a score of two in San Sebastian, and they got off to
the perfect start when teenager Garnacho handled a beautiful through ball from Cristiano Ronaldo before
advancing and scoring in the 17th minute. The 18-year-old scored, passing George Best to become United’s youngest non-English goal scorer in a European match. The game’s MVP was Lisandro
Martinez.
TEN HAAG POST MATCH PRESS CONFERENCE
“Our goal for today was to win by two goals. We tried everything, we took a few more risks at the end to
try and get the second goal. We won the game against a great opponent; it wasn’t because that is what
we needed. If he can keep this going, I am really happy. It was a great finish for his goal.enough to win
the group but it’s a win. I’m happy with some other things, like the performance from Garnacho. Donny,
back in the team. I think we made a really good goal with Garnacho.
I am really happy and I hope he can keep it going. He was a threat, he scored a goal and he was reliable
defending. Some good chances as well. But of course, we are disappointed. We didn’t score two goals .”
The Europa League play-off draw will be held at 12pm on November 7 at UEFA’s headquarters in Nyon,
Switzerland. The eight group runners-up from the Europa League will be seeded to face the eight third-
placed sides from the Champions League group stage.
