TEN HAG ADVISED TO BENCH MAN UTD’S MOST CREATIVE PLAYER AHEAD OF THE
TOTTENHAM CLASH
Former Liverpool player Danny Murphy thinks Bruno Fernandes should be benched by Manchester
United boss Erik ten Hag in order to help him find his best form.
According to Murphy, who cited Fernandes as one of Man United’s most inventive players, Ten Hag
should select Christian Eriksen over the Portugal international based on the latter’s recent performance.
In January 2020, Fernandes joined Manchester United, where he excelled in his first 18 months at Old
Trafford.
In his 13 appearances for Man United thus far this season, Fernandes has only scored once and
recorded two assists, a sharp down from his stellar performance from the previous year.
Although Ten Hag once again chose Fernandes to play behind the striker during Man United’s Premier
League 0-0 draw with Newcastle over the weekend, leaving Eriksen on the bench, Fernandes was
unproductive. Murphy thinks Eriksen ought to start for Man United in place of Fernandes.
“It’s a real concern for one of their most creative players (Fernandes’ lack of goal involvement). I think
when Eriksen comes back he [Erik Ten Hag] may have to take him out of the firing line for a little while
and put Eriksen in [to] give him a little kick up the bottom to see if they can improve his numbers because
every player needs that now and again,” Murphy spoke to The Mail.
CONTE’S TAKE ON TEN HAAG AND ERIKSEN
Antonio Conte has expressed his desire to reunite with Christian Eriksen, the midfielder for Manchester
United. Together at Inter Milan, the Tottenham manager and the Dane will face off against one another
when Manchester United and Spurs square off in a Premier League midweek clash.
Seven points separate the two teams going into Wednesday’s game between Tottenham and United at
Old Trafford. When asked how he feels about Ten Hag, Conte responded: “Honestly I dont know him
very well because we have never played against each other.
“He did very well with Ajax, for sure. He has taken a great job with United. United is one of the best
teams in the world and he’s trying to bring his idea onto the pitch.I think also the club backed him in the
transfer market. Like other managers and coaches, he needs time, time to work to try to improve his
team.”
When aked about his take on Christian Eriksen, he said: “For sure Christian is a player I enjoyed working
with and he’s a player I would like to train again, to have him in my squad but you know very well the
transfer market is very difficult and I think he made a big choice to go to United, to sign a three-year
contract.“‘For him, I wish him the best, for his family, apart from the game against us and for the rest of
the season to be the best on the pitch.”Spurs headcoach concluded.
